Growing Methods

Our approach

Agroecology

We are pursuing an ecological and ethical approach to farming that follows the aims of our landlord The Ecological Land Cooperative.

This ecological approach informs our agriculture (agro-ecological) human-scale farming

Our farm is unique, and there's no favouritism intended. Its made up of interwoven systems that depend on one another – soil, plant, animal, humans and the environment. Its makes sense therefore to see the farm as a whole, one that aims for self sufficiency in a closed loop for fertility, supporting plants and people.

Four principles

Our growing methods on our flower farm start with four principles:

Gratitude. This land belongs to God and we want to give Him the Glory for its success and fruitfulness. We recognise the farm as a living whole—a complex ecosystem; with all the interdependent dynamic parts we strive to establish balance and biological completeness;

Observation. We are part of creation, (or nature), listening, sensing and conversing with our flowers and this land that is in our care;

Responsibility. We realise our interconnectedness to all creation and embrace it, recognising our responsibility to its ecological diversity, beauty and life-sustaining properties;

Nurturing. We aiming to feed the soil with our farm compost, compost-teas, and cover crops, we are looking to keep the soil covered and roots in the ground at all times where possible.

Certification

Trelowen is now certified Organic, with the BDA, enabling us to proudly share our flowers and edimentals with florists, wedding cake makers and chefs.
